The German Department at Kingšs College London would like to invite you to a
"Study Day Critique of Language in Germany" on 12th November 2008,
14.15-18.00 in KCL, Strand Campus, Room K.1.28
with
Falco Pfalzgraf (Queen Mary, London)
Horst Simon (Kingšs College London)
Jana Tereick (Heidelberg)
Probably since the beginning of language, its use has been criticised. The
motivations for criticism are diverse (nationalism, enlightenment,
aesthetics, emancipation ...) in any case it is an attempt to influence
public discourse and thereby society in general.
On this study day, we will give an historical overview of language critique
in Germany and discuss some aspects in more detail, for instance the
feminist critique of language and the linguistic purism among right wing
extremists. Apart from a presentation of key texts and thoughts, there will
be plenty of time for discussions about this highly relevant topic. All
welcome!
(Discussions will be in English, but a basic understanding of German will be
needed.)
