Dear Colleagues,
This summer I have had the opportunity to test fishing gears adapted to catch Loliginid squids paralarvae.
The epibenthic sledge caught much more Cephalopods paralarvae than oblique tows with a zooplakton net.
We have now a number of Loliginid squid paralarvae and we are looking for advice/help to determine them.
(we = Ali Bouali and myself).
We can send pictures made with a binoccular microscope (pictures already made are not very good but we are trying to
improve this). We have also measured the paralarvae (which clearly include small Alloteuthis but the range of sizes is a
continuum up to 6 mm (DML).
We have used the following reference:
Sweeney et al,1992 "Larval and Juvenile Cephalopods: a manual for their identification" Smithonian Contributions to
Zoology #513.
Unfortunately, this reference considers that Alloteuthis hatchlings are "nearly indistinguishable" from Loligo.
I wonder if any progress was made since 1992 in the description of Loliginid paralarvae?
I thank you for your help and/or advice.
Jean-Paul
