Subject: RE: stockhausen study opportunities for students
hello
Over the next 10 days London's Southbank Centre presents both new and old
works by the iconic composer Karlheinz Stockhausen in a festival paying
tribute to his life and music. Alongside UK and World premieres of his work
in the Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Halls we have curated a
programme of events that explore his ideas and music in depth.
I would be very grateful if you would let any students or colleagues know
about the Festival and in particular a series of 3 symposia we are hosting.
Tickets for these are £8 but for groups of 10 or more reduced to £4 per
person(box office 0871 663 2500).
Each of the 3 events feature the world's leading Stockhausen commentators
including Richard Toop and Robin Maconie.
On Friday 7th November at 2pm a music and technology afternoon features a
keynote talk with over 30 audio examples by Robin Maconie and a
presentation on the sound spatialisation for Stockhausen's Cosmic Pulses by
Gregorio Karman of the experimental studios of the SWR.
On Saturday 8th November at 2pm Sydney based musicologist Richard Toop will
focus on Stockhausen's serialism and Morag Grant will address the topic
more broadly in line with her recent book Serial Music, Serial Aesthetics:
Compositional Theory in Post-war Europe.
And on Sunday 9th November Jerome Kohl and Chris Townsend will explore
avante garde music and abstract art from Mondrian and dada to the Koln
scene of the 1960's.
Alongside these study opportunities a Stockhausen Cinema features a rolling
programme of rare films and documentaries sourced from archives across the
world including all 7 of the infamous lecture series from 1972, filmed in
the UK by Allied Artists in which Stockhausen speaks about his key concepts
and works (1st-9th November, free).
A series of club nights presented in association with The Wire magazine and
Nonclassical and featuring performances by John Wall, ffurt and Larry
Goves' The House of Bedlam among others plus, a rare screening of the Quay
Brothers' In Absentia (6th and 7th November, free).
Stuart Gerber, the meastro's chosen percussionist leads a masterclass (4th
November, £10).
Jonathan Harvey features in a conversation on spirituality (5th November,
free).
Plus family workshops and opportunities to listen to interviews and
recordings in the foyer.
I really hope you can make it and encourage your students to join us.
