Research Fellow (Fixed term)
Department of Informatics
School of Science and Technology
Salary range: £29,704 per annum
Fixed term for 23 months, full-time
Expected start date: 1 January 2009
The University of Sussex invites applications for a research fellow to work on an EPSRC funded project entitled, "Flip: A bi-modal programming language for computational thinking"
The aim of the project is to develop a bi-modal (textual and graphical) visual programming language to help young people develop computational thinking skills in the context of 3D role-playing game creation. The project will also be employing a second research fellow on a part-time basis, who will assist in the design process, and run studies to ascertain the effectiveness of the programming language developed.
The successful candidate will use participatory design methods with children in order to design and implement a programming language which integrates with the Neverwinter Nights 2 Electron toolset. The programming language will be bi-modal (i.e. it will comprise both textual and graphical representations which dynamically update). When used in conjunction with the Electron toolset, it will allow young people to create role-playing games and specifically, to script actions and events for their games in an intuitive way. Furthermore, it should allow young people to learn about and reason with simple computational concepts.
A first degree in Computer Science or a related discipline is essential, as are excellent programming skills and knowledge of interface design.
