Thanks for this Julia, I began to worry as I pressed send that I hadn't seen any evidence for Habib's suggestion. Perhaps Mercy was Thomas's daughter or sister, and James helped out in the pub in an informal way? Do we know anything else about Richard Dare? How was he described in the records?
