The Home Office Policing Statistics Group produces and analyses statistics
on police recorded crime and takes the lead in maintaining and improving
quality of this data. This is a high profile post, providing analysis and
briefing on crime trends to policy colleagues and Ministers and also
contributing to wider public debate on crime, most notably via the annual
and quarterly publications on crime.
Applicants should hold a first or second-class honours degree in a numerate
discipline (e.g. statistics, mathematics, economics, sciences, business
studies, psychology, geography)
OR have appropriate experience in a relevant statistical field together with
a minimum of the Royal Statistical Society Higher Certificate.
Experience of production and analysis of statistics for publication is
required whilst experience of managing projects to tight deadlines is also
desirable.
The main duties of the post are:
§Overall responsibility for production of statistics on police recorded
crime to a high standard, including the recorded crime contribution to high
profile annual and quarterly National Statistics publications on crime.
§Interpretation of crime trends both for internal briefing and publication.
§Close liaison with police data providers to maintain quality, and work with
the National Crime Registrar (also based in the group) to maintain the Home
Office rules on counting and classifying crime.
§Line management of seven staff in a way that enhances the performance and
develops the potential of your staff.
§Oversight of the Annual Data Requirement process, whereby future statutory
data requirements from the police are determined.
§Develop the forward programme of statistics work in conjunction with policy
and operational customers.
§Building customer and external user relations and representing the group
externally.
