thanks to all for your very rapid responses.
I haven't seen the details yet but I understand
that the lifts will be enclosed, but initial
intention is for the size to be only 1100 x 1400
which I have suggested is inadequate for some users
so I will be pressing for a size that can
accomodate all users (e.g the Rascal 889 Scooter is
1460 mm long) in order to meet their DDA Duty.
There is a drop-off at the entrance and a number of
Blue Badge spaces but experience shows that these
fill very rapidly.
I will be pressing for a rigorous maintenance
contract and hands-free comms within the lift
cabins for emergency use.
The steps will remain. My worry was the lack of a
ramp at all for those who could not use steps but
did not like lifts. Earlier discussions around the
gradient got quite heated and we got agreement for
resting places beside the ramp at several points,
but it seems the ramp is proving difficult to
achieve at all.
The road access to the site is very steep but there
is maintenance and delivery access - the ramp in
question is purely for the car park.

Hi Vin,
My thoughts would be:
Could they get a drop off point at the entrance?
If lifts are provided can they be covered from the
elements (time and
H&S)
Regular maintenance and testing of the lifts must
be provided.
Steps must still be provided.
The route should be as similar to the main route as
possible.
I would be concerned about what happens when the
lifts are out of order
?
Are they having trouble getting a compliant ramp or
just a ramp ?
Something is better than noting for assisted use
when the lifts are not
working.
Regards
Martin

Subject: Replacing long ramp with lifts
Hi,
A hospital construction project on the side of a
mountain (I kid you
not!) is nearly completed and the plans include
steps and a ramp to the
car park some metres above entrance level.
The developers wanted to provides steps only until
we explained that
some people could not manage steps and a ramp was
required to meet
Building Regs but they are having problems
constructing a ramp due to
the terrain and now are suggesting a two-stage lift
instead.
My initial reaction was that this could be
acceptable as long as the
lift accomodated large wheelchairs and scooters but
any comments on the
proposal would be welcome.
many thanks,
Vin
