I have spoken with Dr McLaren in the past, and looked at the his lab
when he was at Biolabs. They actually care and take a lot of effort to
ensure their results are correct. From the last time I spoke to him, I
believe he was even considering registering for CPA accreditation .
The problem with Biolad (or Acumen) is not the quality of the results;
which from what I have seen is actually very good [they participated in
traditional EQA for the analytes for which that was possible and from my
experience as panel chair, these non-traditional labs were often better
than some NHS labs at responding to panel queries]. The problem is the
belief system around what is being measured. We are trained with a
particular mindset about what results mean. We are also trained to
believe a particular type of result has meaning and other results do
not. The alternative medicine practitioners believe that what they
measure is meaningful and cannot understand why we don't agree.
It is alleged that Samuel Johnson (although some sources suggest Sydney
Smith), when he saw two wome bickering across the street through their
upstairs windows that "they will never agree because they are arguing
from different premises". Our philosphy therefore cannot understand what
to do with a set of 'weird' results; just as a Jungian cannot understand
why a Freudian has given a particular line of psychotherapy...
To interpret alternative results, you need an alternative physician [and
they tend not to be provided by the NHS]. The one who causes most
problems (er... Assists most patients with alternative therapy) around
here is Sarah Myhill.
Google gives her details as:

Subject: Science or Not?
Hi
I've just been talking to a GP who has had a report from a Dr John
McLaren- Howard of Acumen Lab (Tiverton, Devon).
A patient's family had sent him blood from their autistic and tired son
for
analysis. The report is long, complex and full of big words (superoxide
dismutase, glutathione complexes, short chain polypeptides, nickel
involvement). It also has results for ATP levels, mitochondrial
membrane pH
and mitochondrial membrane calcium measurements among others.
If anyone has come across this man and his works I would be grateful for
any
information.
Thanks
Graham
