I doubt very much that anyone believes there will be policy without politics. what politics means is the question.
lots of folks over here are very tired of politics that are tied almost exculsively to partisan advancement. they are also tired of cynical politics,
and of politics that are vindictive, locked in past trials and tribulations and do not aspire to move things forward.
an example is the prochoice/antiabortion debate in this country. as a supporter of choice, i have no stomach for
those seeking to reverse rowe v wade. but i also recognize that the numbers of teenage pregnancies is a problem that cant
wait for the anti abortionist to give up the ghost. as obama suggested, perhaps decreasing the number of pregnant teenagers
is something we can all aspire to. and wait for the times to improve.
so policy without politics? no, policy with shrewd and hopeful politics. declaring an open fight is not always the only or best way to win..
but not declaring a fight requires some faith by observers that the objectives of change are not lost.
here in the US, i think our task is to keep organizing and holding the faith so that, when and if push comes to shove, we are in an immediate position to reaffirm our support for change.

> Policy without politics.......a very British idea (Sir Humphrey Appleby
of Yes Minister...trying to save us from politicians..admittedly a
tempting idea!); also a very bourgeois idea (all policy is technical
evaluation, with values implicitly assumed to be universal....egFukuyama
when he was a teenage hack in the State Department; he's older and wiser
now); also a very 'Chicago' idea (let's hope Barack is not a 'Chicago
boy' altho' from Illinois!)in which people impose their reactionary
policies on the world and claim they're apolitical.....
any one else for tennis?
