Sorry, my memory is coming back in dribs and drabs demented as I am...
but this may help. If not; ignore it.
On typefaces: Don't use Times Roman or Century. These are designed for
newspapers and magazines which have more then one column of type in a
page. Choose a typeface designed for books, like (11/17pt) Palatino,
which Dorothy Porter's, What a piece of work, is typeset in and suits
her short punchy lines.(The 11/17pt refers to 11 point typeface on a 17
point leading, which is to say the space between lines.) Also use a
serif face. San serif faces can slow down reading speed and make
something which should flow seem more choppy.
Bembo book is another classic book font. I am using Bookman 11/17pt for
my current manuscript with Lyx and LaTex, but this is only for the
manuscript, since this is the only decent book typeface I have on Fedora
9. (LaTex is really not up to the standard required for book publishing,
being more designed for academic journals and quick and easy
mathematical typesetting but then I am an ex-publisher and hence taught
to be very fussy about typesetting.) I just discovered F9 also has
Sribus... talking about bad memory and dementia....
(And, the design and production side of books is not that hard to read
up on and learn BTW. try: www.linotype.com)
