Wound Dresser
Arrived at length in
Washington D.C.,
we walked to the National
Portrait Gallery.
Walt Whitman's beard
streamed out redly.
During the War this building
was a hospital visited by
Whitman who dressed the wounds
of soldiers and gave them hope.
In the evening
we watched tv:
the president elect
spoke to the people
evoking hope, saying
they should 'care
for each other.'
