Warwick actively participates in University Undergraduate and
Postgraduate Open Days.
For Undergraduate Open Days we usually have dedicated staff positioned
in the Library to speak to prospective students and their parents about
our services, resources and give away promotional material. We have
found it very useful for getting information across and it's usually the
parents that have all the questions! It's a great opportunity for
prospective students to see the size of the Library and the full range
of services available to them - it always meets with a very positive
reaction. This has a knock-on effect for Library staff too because they
are getting really positive feedback about the place they work and is a
very motivating experience.
In addition the University offers student-led campus tours which include
the Library. We make sure we update the tour guides' crib sheets so
that they're giving the messages we want rather than what they feel as a
student themselves. We also publicise the Library in the Open Day
brochures, advertising the fact that we're open for people to drop in.
There is only one draw back in my opinion and that is for Open Days held
in May. Last year we had problems with the number of external visitors
disturbing students during their tense exam period. This year we will
look to control where external visitors visit so that we can maintain
silent areas for revision.
For Postgraduate Open Days we also have drop ins and for the first time
this year there will be staff located in the new research postgraduate
facility. We also have a Library stand in a central area alongside
other PG support services and departments. The stand is staffed by
Academic Support and again has proved very useful in getting key
messages out to these prospective PGs.
An additional benefit to all these activities is that it creates links
with other services and departments so also helps to promote library
staff and raise the library's profile to our internal and existing
users.
