Unfortunately most of you are too far away to accept this invitation, but for
those of you in the southwestern USA, please stop by an exhibition of
photomicrographs at the Arizona State Museum , which will run through January
8th. An announcement of the exhibit, and three sample images, are online at:
http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu/exhibits/beyondnakedeye/index.shtml
Most of the images were taken by graduate students in the IGERT Program on
Archaeological Science (http://datamonster.sbs.arizona.edu/IGERT/), though some
were taken at the University of Arizona as far back as 1880. The pictures in the
exhibit included metallographic, petrographic, fluorescence and SEM images of
metals, slags, earthenware pottery, glazes, fibers, and stained tree rings and
roots.
The images were selected for their visual appeal, but panels beside them explain
what they show and the scientific projects for which they are sources of
evidence. The target audience is mostly school groups - we will resort to
anything to try to get more students interested in science!
