An interesting and thought provoking thread.
I agree with Leon about how much learning is now taking place outside
the school/college/university - probably more than at any time over
the last 150 years, thanks to technology and, particularly,
technologically mediated social networks. That said, I think there's a
little life yet in the educational institution, which is, for our
learners, a big part of, probably the core of their learning network.
This means that there's life yet in the VLE, as the place where the
institution can provide content and shared activities, as well, I'd
hope, as a place where the learners can share some of the wonderful
things they create using the tools from outside the wire.
Roger's comparison with web2 in commercial contexts is an illuminating
one: many firms are now embracing this, recognising that loose task
based teams and independent projects (eg google) are more effective or
creative than hierarchical management, but certainly not all:
similarly in education, we'll see some at the cutting edge embracing
these tools and the associated new ways of working, but others quite
content with the way they've always done things, or its
technologically enhanced replacement.
I've blogged a few thoughts of my own over at http://milesberry.net/?p=346
