Dear all,
Recently, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) has
provided funding for one PhD-project, to be completed at Radboud University
Nijmegen, Institute for Management Research, research group 'Governance and
Places'.
The project has a duration of four years; intended starting date is appr. 1
January 2009.
The deadline for submitting applications is 9 November 2008.
Brief project description:
The project is part of a larger research program titled 'Synchronizing
networks'. This program aims to study how accessibility in the Randstad can
be improved by synchronizing networks of passenger mobility, activity
locations, and activity patterns, in time, space and virtual space. The
concept of supernetworks is used the analytical framework of the various
projects. This implies that transport, ICT and facilities networks are
modelled and analyzed in an integrated fashion, rather than as separate
entities.
The synchronization of networks and, hence, the development of supernetwork
solutions, requires adequate governance mechanisms that induce multiple
actors to coordinate their actions and interventions. The goal of the
research project is to identify and validate promising coordination
mechanisms using a multi-agent model.
To that effect, promising coordination mechanisms will be identified,
through study of mechanisms from other regions and other policy domains. A
multi-agent model will subsequently be developed to simulate the dynamic
behavior of actors involved in network synchronization and formally test
mechanisms or protocols for coordination. In the third stage of the project,
coordination mechanisms will be validated empirically in the laboratory
setting of the Nijmegen Decision Lab. This lab provides an environment in
which real-life actors simulate the dynamics of decision-making within a
given set of rules.
