Yes. In SPM5 and below there the 4 columns hard-coded. Hence, you are right
that you can only specify 3 factors (and you are limited to 2-way
interaction in "Main Effects & Interactions". Not sure if that will change
in SPM8.
That doesn't mean that you cannot test for the 3-way interactions in SPM5
using an appropriate contrast, but you would have collape 2 factors into 1
and you will not get the appropriate variance components this way.
(But up until SPM5 the variance components were not entirely correct, e.g.
SPM2 only implemented a one-way repeated measures ANOVA and you had to
collapse all you experimental factors into a single factor.)
As for your error, please make sure again that
spm_config_factorial_design.m has the following version string
% $Id: spm_config_factorial_design.m 1094 2008-01-15 18:28:36Z Darren $
or above. This one works for me.
If the error still persists, then there is something wrong with your
subject configuration, because you only get that error if your subject
configuration section is not configured and SPM assumes that you want sumit
your own factor matrix (SPM.xX.I).
