I think Ben Jonson called Pericles 'a mouldy old tale'. In some ways
Shakespeare can be like early Hollywood, for instance the brothel
scene in Pericles when the virtuous maiden is unseduced is,
theatrically, risible: one would like to imagine life could be like
that but ...
We know a lot, factually, about WS, much more than we do about Kyd or
Webster or Marlowe or Jonson, for example, yet with those we have a
much clearer sense of who the personalities were, with WS there is
this absence.
