Thanks for this, Max. On the basis of past performances witnessed, I wouldn't think of
reading the first four. I'm not sure if "Patricia Smith" is the black performance poet or
another backward-looking figure, so I hold off on judgment. More important to me than
the nominees are the judges: were they named or concealed?
I'm off to catch this reading--each figure intrigues me:

Anne Tardos, Stacy Szymaszek, and Doug Lang
@ DC Arts Center
This reading is sponsored in part by Poets & Writers.
Anne Tardos is a poet and visual artist. She is the author of several books of poetry and
the multimedia performance work and radio play Among Men. A selection of her readings
and performances (many with Jackson Mac Low) can be heard on the University of
Pennsylvania's web site: PennSound and on UbuWeb Sound. Her book of new poetry, I
Am You, has appeared from Salt Publishing, and she is the editor of Thing of Beauty, by
Jackson Mac Low, California.
Stacy Szymaszek is the author of Emptied of All Ships (Litmus, 2005) as well as many
chap books, most recently Orizaba: A Voyage With Hart Crane (Faux, 2008) and from
Hyperglossia (Hot Whiskey, 2008). The complete Hyperglossia will be published by Litmus
Press in early 2009. She is the editor of Gam and the Artistic Director of the Poetry
Project at St. Mark's Church.
Doug Lang was born and raised in Wales, and has published poetry and novels in the UK.
He came to DC in 1973, where he ran the Folio Reading Series in the late 1970s, and
where he has taught writing at the Corcoran College of Art and Design since 1976. He was
one of the poets representing DC at the recent Poetry of the 1970s conference at Orono.
A collection of his selected poems, In the Works, is forthcoming from Edge Books.
