it's easier to brush english language haiku aside than to actually endeavour
to put some soul into the practice. it strikes me as stuck-up to compare
hallmark sentiments to a type of literature that is hard to do & which
conveys surprising & clever connections when done well. the whole argument
about the cultural translation of the artform being untenable in the weast
is an over-academic & oversimplistic argument to me.
one of Higginson's books on haiku that I have is interesting & has a depth
of spirit that I admire, and his ideas echoed my own at the time. I also
read Kenneth Yasuda's "Japanese Haiku", which despite its title is all
about how we should write & read english haiku; it was the most deplorably
dry, ridiculous, irritating work of clumsy & faux-innovative guidelines I've
ever read -- especially by comparison.
