My old belts
These leather belts when new
and for many years thereafter
took turns to modestly
hold up my trousers.
Strange now how far short
they reach round my waist.
A gap between buckle
and first notch gapes.
Back then they put a slim girdle
round my slender girth.
I had hip bones then, my wallet
snugly fit in my hip pocket.
My middle years undid
that middle. Strange
to think back, flatten again
that bulge at the equator,
unmake that paunch.
Banished at length and for long
to the back of the wardrobe –
away with them to charity.
And now, a hearty lunch.
