Today, I'm excited about reading Sheila Murphy's COLLECTED CHAPBOOKS (Blue
Lion Books, 2008). It arrived about a week ago and, due to work pressure,
I've only got around to it in the last couple of days - a small virus has
made me lie down so I've been reading (oh, luxury!). What this book is doing
for me is letting me follow Sheila's poetic as it has evolved from Virtuoso
Bird 1981 to Heresiarch 2002. Robert Duncan once wrote, 'There is a natural
mystery in poetry. We do not understand all that we render up to
understanding.' This is true, and one part of me celebrates this mystery,
while another part of me tries to explain. So I journey, slowly, through
Sheila's poems delighting in their unqiueness but also, as a poet myself,
trying to learn tricks to progress my own writing.
I ordered mine through Lulu. There may be quicker ways for those of you
nearer to the source. I recommend it heartily.
