It's being a pretty amazing festival, though with a couple of (major!)
disappointments among the pleasures. 10 shows so far and it's not even
the first week...hoping I'm still in one piece by the 25th, since I
have to review everything to earn my tickets. I went crazy on the
program this year and I've only got one night off in the three
weeks...
Smith is not humourless, the reverse rather. But she's absolutely
straight up. Irony's a tricky one, since in many ways it's a deep part
of my modus operandi, but I still hate its use as an escape hatch - I
wrote a piece called The Death of Irony for Meanjin a few years ago,
which I guess expresses some of my ambiguities -
