We are looking for a Postdoc in organic geochemistry to study the
organic geochemistry of hydrothermal vents of the Loki’s Castle
hydrothemal field, a new black smoker field that was discovered in
August 2008 on the Knipovich Ridge in the N-Atlantic. (see http://interridge.org/fr/node/5581
and http://www.geobio.uib.no/View.aspx?mid=1062&itemid=90&pageid=1090&moduledefid=72)
for more information.
The Post doc will work within the the framework of the project
H2DEEP, a collaborative project in the European science foundation
EuroMARC programme, betwen the Unverisity of Bergen, IPGP-Paris, ETH-
Zürich, University of Lissabon and the University of Washington. The
project is aimed at studying geodynamic and hydrothermal processes and
their links to the deep biosphere along the Southern Knipovich Ridge,
one of the slowest spreading segments of the global ridge system.
The succesful candidate will investigate the organic geochemistry of
fluids, microbial mats and hydrothermally altered sediments around
Loki’s Castle hydrothermal field. The organic geochemical analyses
will be coupled with microbiological studies carried out at the
Geobiology Center of the University of Bergen to evaluate the links
between hydrothermal activity and the deep biosphere.
You will join a growing organic geochemistry group in Department of
Earth Sciences of ETH Zürich and have acces to a well-equipped organic
geochemistry laboratory including a ASE accelerated Solvent extractor,
GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC-MS and a state of the art stable isotope
laboratory equipped with three mass spectrometers for C, N, S, H and
O isotopes and a new GC-IRMS for compound-specific carbon and hydrogen
isotope anylsis.
The position is for 2 years and is available immediately or upon
agreement.
