Hi Jacqui
I have been looking into the use of trade testing for colour vision
screening in the electricity industry; as many of the list have pointed
out there is a place for this for those who fail the ishihara or other
colour vision tests.
We undertake Colour vision testing for our apprentices and existing work
force but some who fail this test can clearly identify coloured wires
used in the industry. I have therefore worked with our training school
to get wire samples from cables that are actually used in the business
for trade testing. My manager has also discussed this with one of the
HSE Physicians to look clinical standards for this - in my opinion as
long as you have a realistic reliable test which is reproducible and
clearly recorded it is a useful tool for assessing suitability for role.
Therefore I would suggest that you get sample wires from within your
client business but if you are going to do this yourself ensure that you
have a clear procedure for it.
Best wishes
Jane

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Colour matching wires
Hello all
does anyone know where I can purchase the wire bundle which is used for
testing colour deficiency?
The electrical engineering dept could do to get one they are buying an
ishihara for their students prior to enrollment on courses but have had
experience of electricians who are experienced but fail the ishihara. I
have
used the wire bundle in the past for such cases in a previous employer
but a
google search only throws up the patent!
