The problem I have come across in previous jobs is when an employee has
a second job, which could be the case with p/t workers.

1 case I had was when a lady was signed off sick with 'stress' for
several weeks. When I assessed her I determined that the stress was
related to her second job but was affecting her ability to do her day
job! The outcome was I advised that she was fit to RTW to her day job
(where I was providing OH service) with all normal support etc etc - but
very difficult, i.e. can you be off sick from one job but fit to do
another, how does that affect pay - if entitled to sick pay in other
job, what about SSP? What does the full time contract say about second
jobs? What about working time regs etc etc..........

I saw quite a few like this - second jobs causing various problems,
couldn't do a phased return because hours wouldn't fit with going from
this job and travelling to the other. Quite amazing!

Good luck with your assignment Janet!

Kind regards

Janet,

I am part time, along with several others at my workplace and we are
treated just the same as everyone else. The problem I have in OH is
with Temps. I don't usually get told about Temps despite telling them
that the Temps are working with the same substances as permanent staff
and their health is just as important. I saw someone yesterday as a
`new starter' and he told me he had been here for a year as a Temp and
had just been made permanent.
Luckily he does not require any health surveillance. I find this
problem at other workplaces as well so it is probably quite widespread.

Hope that helps,
Lynda

Does anyone have any thoughts about part time workers and how the
current climate might affect them? Do you think that they are fairly
treated by OH and their employers?

Any thoughts appreciated - part of assignment for OH degree

Janet
