I am still thinking about the depth and agency issue around media art. I do
not buy the idea that it lacks these qualities. I firmly believe the
opposite. I also disagree with Steve Dietz that there have never been any
good media artists (although he restricted his judgement to net art but I
would disagree with that too).
I think there have been good media artists and here are the names of a few
who I would include in that list (not exhaustive and alphabetical, so as to
avoid ranking). Some of these artists have only made a few pieces (perhaps
only one) that were brilliant, or only did so during a period of their
practice (anything by Viola after 1985 is bloated and awful) but for me they
have all managed to make something that my experience of was such that I
would happily put it alongside the experiences I have had looking at works
by Twombly or Kiefer, both of whom have been mentioned in this thread.
I would also note that both Twombly and Kiefer are artists who work within
certain romantic and expressive conventions of art. There are other
modalities, of equal value, which evoke quite different emotions, just as
intense.
