This is the title of the latest installation in the Turbine Hall at London's Tate
Modern. By French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, TH.2058 looks 50 years
into the future, creating a vast underground shelter from endless rain,
complete with an array of bunk beds, strewn with paperback books,
reconstructions of works of art, and clips from sci-fi movies. The notion of the
shelter is partly science fiction, partly inspired by the idea of London as a city
under attack.
I'm not going to comment on TH.2058 (though I have visited it and do have a
view) but it's interesting as an artist's view of threat, disaster and the future.
I wonder how other artists deal with such issues? Maybe we should be
encouraging their visions?
