yeahbut, note that Christopher has eschewed his original guess that it it's an
ombrellino, in favor of the morebetter idea that they are tintinabulae --the
shape of which fit better with what the badges are portraying.

alls we have to go on are "aartistic" depictions --we've got the 11th c.
Italian fresco for the parasol (and maybe some others, somewhere).
and we've got the 13th [presumably] c. pilgrims' badge from Chartres
--whatever it is on that crude thing.
