If you have
experience of cataloguing or database compilation but need guidance or practice
using AACR2 and MARC (including MARC21), or want to refresh knowledge gained
some time ago, this course will give you the skills needed, including some
practice in using online public access catalogues (OPACs) and thinking about
their design criteria. Participants are invited to bring typical material from
their collections to form a group of items that can be considered in the
practical sessions. This course is not aimed at complete beginners; they would
benefit by taking Aslib's companion course "Basic Cataloguing and
Indexing" prior to this course. Course Director: James
 Shearer

INFORMATION
ACRHITECTURE: EXPLORING THE FUNAMENTALS Friday 10, £260+VAT (£325+VAT) NOW FULL

http://www.aslib.com/training/3/04.html

Information
Architecture (IA) involves understanding your content and your users in the
context of your business and applying that understanding to the design and
structure of your online information spaces, whether intranet, website or other
online content system. This one-day introduction
will explore the fundamentals of IA and good usability design. It will involve
a blend of presentation, discussion and practical exercises that can be taken
back and applied within your own organisations. Course Director: Kate
Simpson

EU INFORMATION,
Monday 13, £260+VAT (£325+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/1/06.html

European Union
information is an intensive one day course that will introduce you to the
European Union - its institutions, legislative acts and how policy is made -
and how to find out about its activities. There will also be an examination of
the practical information implications of 'better regulation', and the ways
that EU law is transposed and implemented in the UK. Reflecting the central role of the internet as
a medium for finding about the EU the course will
highlight the key official and other websites for EU information: this will
include legislation and other policy-making information, keeping up-to-date,
policy information, contact information and bibliographical sources. There will
be some hands-on time to allow you to examine the sites demonstrated. The
latest developments in this fast-moving area will always be highlighted.
Relevant print sources will also be mentioned, when appropriate. Course
Director: Ian Thomson

STATISTICS FOR
BUSINESS, Tuesday 14, £260+VAT (£325+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/1/11.html

Statistical data is
a vital aid to decision making in business. Statistics are important to provide
information on existing and potential markets, measure industry performance and
indicate social and economic trends. This course is intended for those who want
to gain a better understanding of statistical data, key concepts and available
sources. It will be of interest to all information professionals whose work
involves the use of statistics. Course Director:
Chris Murphy

UNDERSTANDING AND
ASSESSING INFORMATION NEEDS, Wednesday 15,
£280+VAT (£350+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/4/24.html

Understanding the
information needs of users - individuals and groups - is an absolute necessity
of an information worker, or information service, is to be effective. This
course gives both a thorough understanding of the concepts, and practical
skills for understanding and assessing information, from the immediate needs of
a single user needing information (the 'reference interview') to the
all-encompassing information needs of a whole organisation (part of an
information management audit). Course
Director: Prof. David Bawden

NEGOTIATING ONLINE
SUBSCRIPTIONS, Friday 17, (pm), £150+VAT(£187.50+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/2/08.html

It is tough out
there at the moment. We all need to make an impression on our employers and one
way we can achieve this is to save money. It is often awkward talking about
money and this session gives practical guidance on how to broach the subject
with the publisher. This session is aimed at anyone who has to deal with online
resource renewals, new subscriptions or cancellations. The workshop provides
practical tips and strategies you can really use. Delegates will be able to
learn from the experience of the presenter as well as have the opportunity to
discuss their own experiences. Course Director:
Fiona Fogden

BUSINESS PLANS: How
to Produce a Workable and Convincing Business Plan, Monday 20, (pm),
£150+VAT(£187.50+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/2/1.html

A well-conceived
business plan is a powerful aid to achieving better results, not only in the
commercial world, but in any other field of activity. Unfortunately many plans
are marred by a lack of realism, the failure to build in contingency measures
to cope with different future situations and the absence or inadequacy of vital
elements. This course will explain the soundly established principles for
devising a plan that works whether it is one page in length or far more
complex. Another common cause of failure is poor construction and presentation
of otherwise viable plans and so the course also shows how to produce ones that
will compel attention and acceptance. Course
Director: Chris Murphy

PRESENTATION SKILLS,
Wednesday 22, £230+VAT (£287.50+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/2/09.html

This intensive
course will help you to make memorable and effective presentations. It is a
very practical workshop and you will gain the opportunity to develop your
presentation techniques in a non-threatening atmosphere. Course Director: Nicola
 Wise

EFFECTIVE TEAM
BUILDING SKILLS, Friday 24, £260+VAT (£325+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/2/03.html

This course is
aimed at those responsible for motivating and managing their
library/information service team. It provides a practical overview of the
management skills and techniques required to develop and maintain a productive
and effective team. It will enable you to develop strategies for managing
challenging situations and you will learn how to create a self motivating and
self regulating team. Course Director: Nicola Wise

METADATA:
PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, Tuesday 28. £260+VAT (£325+VAT)

Metadata is one of
the most important, but least understood, aspects of the modern information
environment. This course demystifies the concept of metadata, and shows how and
why it is used, in a variety of environments. A variety of commonly-used metadata
formats will be demonstrated for example Dublin Core, and AACR/MARC - and the
way in which metadata creation relates to the 'traditional' library/information
tasks of indexing and cataloguing will be outlined. Library/information workers are often called
to create metadata records; they may also be asked to evaluate, choose or
create metadata formats for their organisation's information. This course deals
with both these topics, in principle and in practice. Course Director: Prof. David Bawden

RUNNING AN EFFECTIVE
INFORMATION SERVICE WITH LIMITED RESOURCES, Wednesday 29, £230+VAT
(£287.50+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/4/12.html

So you've been
given an information service to manage. You have a room - perhaps containing
shelves of publications inherited from your predecessor. You have a desk, with
a networked computer and a phone, which is ringing. Where do you start? Step-by-step,
this one-day course will take you through the basics of setting up and running
an effective information service for your organisation. Participative and
practical throughout, it includes exercises and feedback, with plenty of
opportunity for discussion and ideas sharing.
Course Director: Tim Buckley Owen

BASIC CATALOGUING
AND INDEXING, Thursday 30, £230+VAT (£287.50+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/4/02.html

This course is
aimed at people who need to organise a collection of information but who have
little or no knowledge or experience of how to do it. The collection may
include books, periodicals, photographs, videos, computer discs, Internet page
references and other material. The course will show beginners how to create and
maintain control over this material so that required items and information can
be retrieved. The emphasis is on practical cataloguing and participants are
invited to bring typical material from their collections to form a group of
items that can be considered in the practical sessions. The final section of
the course considers how computers can assist in cataloguing and indexing, with
practical demonstrations. However, no prior computer experience is needed for
this. Course Director: James Shearer

EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUES
IN DESK RESEARCH, Friday 31, £260+VAT (£325+VAT)

http://www.aslib.com/training/6/02.html

This course is
aimed at 1) professionals who are at the point in their career where they are
adding longer term project work to their basic information retrieval duties and
2) managers/mentors helping such people. It details a step-by-step structure
that can help manage the research process with a particular emphasis on
reference interview techniques, data collection, methods of adding value and
managing an effective feedback process. The focus is on practicality and the
course is based on systems the lecturer has helped set up and run himself. According
to the particular needs of the group on the day, a number of pre-prepared units
can be slotted in including, for instance, using the telephone as a research
tool and managing a fee-charging service. The emphasis of the day is very much
to encourage debate and best practice sharing amongst delegates who have the
opportunity to discuss the challenges they face with fellow professionals. Course
Director: John Harrow
