Healthcare librarians are in the frontline when it comes to the translation of
evidence into medical practice. They are responsible both for identifying best
available evidence through the application of search and appraisal skills and
for developing those skills in healthcare professionals.
This workshop has been designed enhance existing appraisal skills and to look
at how to facilitate the use of critical appraisal in a range of clinical settings.
The format will be highly interactive, with a mix of presentations, group work
and discussions.
By the end of the course participants will:
have a clear understanding of the following types of research:
o systematic reviews
o randomised controlled trials
o qualitative studies
be aware of how these study types add to the evidence base;
be familiar with the appraisal process for each type;
understand the fundamentals of statistics* necessary for critical
appraisal;
be able to facilitate the development of critical appraisal skills in
others.
Who should attend: Library and information staff working in a health setting or
anyone involved with teaching critical appraisal skills.
Workshop attendees will be required to do around 3 hours of pre-work.
* Please note: this is not a statistics course.
