Hi Nick, Alice
Our recommendation is always to use "relationships" to highlight
relationships between records where those relationships are not
otherwise obvious. So as you say, not much point using them to say
things are a) close to each other, b) contemporary. But they can be
useful to show a relationship where this might not otherwise be obvious,
e.g. between two records that are say functionally related but spatially
separated (e.g. elements of a WWII defensive line, parts of an indutrial
process, abbey/grange, settlement/shieling) (peer-to-peer functional),
or to show where a child record provides more detailed information about
part of a parent record (parent-child hierarchical).
Cheers
Crispin

Subject: Re: Monument relationships
Hi Alice
SNAP! I am writing manuals too, great isnt it?
I have done our relationship one, and we have basically decided not to
record any. I have to be honest and say I remain unconvinced as to the
use of recording relationships, as most of them appear to duplicate
other data, but that may just be how we work/how I have understood
things.
Historically our records were linked hierarchically (ie parent child)
but we are going to remove these as part of general cleaning of data (as
it was just a geographical thing which is now available from the GIS)
Chronological linking - can't you just get this by querying on period?
Am I missing something here?
Like I say we are not planning to record any, but would be interested to
see what you come up with to see if you have thought of things I
haven't.
best wishes

I'm in the middle of writing our HER recording manual, and am wondering
how other HERs use monument relationships to structure their data. Here
in Norfolk we're really only using parent-child and peer-peer
(chronological) relationships at the moment, but I was wondering whether
there are any other useful relationship types that other HERs are using
that we might want to adopt.
Any info/suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks,
Alice
