Hi,
We have had a discussion here at Portsmouth and we reckon its is more likely to be Saxon. This is based on the style of piece and also the image of what could be Jesus on a cross . The Scandinavians did not covert until quite late. The area in which it was found was also not under Danelaw, which also makes it very unlikely it is Scandinavian.
Until its age is known this could all be wrong!

I agree with Matt Williams. You need to get some higher resolution shots
of the rock type rather than the carving on the surface! However, based on
its general dark colour, the mottled appearance and the fact that is
seemed to be relatively easy to carve and has smoothed edges, I wouldn't
be surprised if it turns out to be serpentinite.
All best,
Lyall
