Have you come across the research [2007] that 'Senior Startup businesses' by
the over 50s who decide to 'go it alone' by setting up their own businesses are
contributing a staggering £24.4 billion to the UK economy per year? It was a
study by Yellow Pages and Kingston University.
It would seem that - despite the current gloom - there may still be hope for
the older population. Unfortunately, it is not taken as seriously as it should be,
especially by employers who need further encouragement to value the role of
older staff.
At the Institute of Education we have tried to move things along a little by
starting the first course** that looks at older people in the round, with special
focus on how their continued learning will contribute to their own well-being
and health, and also to the economy.
