Post Graduate Travel Planning Network – 28 October 2008
Travel planning is gaining momentum in the UK amongst local authorities, NHS
Trusts, educational establishments and others as people become more aware
of its financial, social and environmental benefits. More businesses too are
realising that there are business efficiency benefits to be gained from being
involved in how their employees travel to, from and for work as well as
whether they travel to work as alternative workstyles, such as home working,
might in some cases suit business and employee needs better.
As yet, however, there would appear to be only a handful of Masters, PhD and
Doctoral students focusing their research on travel planning. In order to
capture the work of these students, to raise the academic profile of the
subject and to ensure that the output is put into business practice Dr Jacqui
Wilkinson, Head of Sustainable Travel at the Department for Transport (DfT)
and Professor Stephen Ison of Loughborough University are forming a
PhD/Doctoral Travel Planning Network.
The network will be supported by the DfT and funded by the National Business
Travel Network (NBTN). The remit of NBTN is to encourage businesses –
specifically the FTSE 350 – to take up travel planning and alternative ways of
working for business efficiency, environmental and social reasons and it is
considered that the output of the research network will help drive this
agenda.
If you are interested and your research covers travel planning then we would
be pleased to hear from you. The first meeting of the Network will take place
at Loughborough University on 28th October 2008 starting at 1000 hours
through to 1500 hours. Lunch will be provided and expenses will be paid.
