This discussant based session seeks to explore the impacts of reforms in
Fourth Level education on Geography PhD programmes in different national
settings. The Geography Doctorate is undergoing change in response to
neoliberal reforms in higher education systems; the rise of a global
competition for talented students; more corporate funding of PhD
programmes; the schoolification of Geography Departments, growing interest
in advanced training for research students, and the development of new
technologies for collecting, analysing, and presenting data and defending
thesis.
Discussants are invited to draw upon their own personal experience and/or to
pass comment on the status of the PhD programme in national policy
frameworks and Higher Education Funding proposals. In so doing they might
wish to consider one or more of the following :
Trends in the funding of PhD students
Relationships between Diploma, Masters and PhD programmes
Trends in numbers doing PhD students
Scale, content, and forms of advanced training provided
Approaches to supervision
Assessment procedures and forms of Viva Voce.
Status of cross institutional and cross disciplinary doctorates.
Ethical Issues and PhD research
Field work safety and PhD programmes
Teaching opportunities and obligations
Contributions should last no more than 10-15 mins. Interest should be
expressed by November 1st.
