I have yet to check out the new software but simple CSM diagrams tend to be cut and pasted between reports with barely any site feature representation.
They are of no use beyond the most preliminary of risk identification excercises.
The CSM diagrams should be as suitable for purpose as the CSM itself, the level of detail must vary as the job progresses and there should be enough diagrams to communicate the model.
Its certainly not easy to have a simple and clear diagram and have detail at the same time but it can be done usually using more than one diagram.
A standard tool might be very helpful but the kind of site specifc CAD drawings Nik can send out are well worth the effort.
Perhaps the LQM website could use some US mapping I heard but havent tested that its more freely avilable for use than OS?

I disagree with your assertion Nik. I think if CSM's were simpler them people would use them more, making the graphics understandable is surface dressing and possibly there could be an enormous range of options from simple drawings to inserted actual pictures or complex graphics drawn from onsite maps or photos. Substance not the aesthetics should be our primary concern.

I have just had a quick look on the LQM website to see the conceptual model programme which is now being sold/touted for use and am appalled at what I've seen. I have attached a bite from the web site showing a site plan.
I would expect my wife's primary school class (age 7) to produce better!!
If this is as good as it gets I would prefer hand drawings to be submitted with SI reports.
We have a CAD lad in house who in no time can generate a cross section plan where required and site plans for every project we work on. This looks to be etchasketch for consultants!! If you want a computered aided drawing - get a CAD tech!
If this is not a true representation of the quality of the work which can be obtained from the conceptual model programme please put better examples on the web site.
