Cahn was very clear that the unit of payment has to be 'time' and there is no different value between people because money can only value what is in scarce supply, or perceived to be so, and therefore distorts values greatly e.g. men vs women, mothers, nannies (providing one of the most important contributions to society by looking after our children - not really reflected in their pay).

HI there
Yes, I think we have time banks here in the UK.
But
What Julie said about her experience of LETS does seem similar to what I found too, and in some ways I think, well it's obvious and not surprising is it... seems like potentially a good idea in theory but again whoever has most social power has the advantage.
So, moving on to time banks I think just highlights another angle on this... the market... how everything is up for being bought and sold (love? in the case of our own work)... and look what a bloody great mess that gets us into. But I must confess I don't really know anything about economic theories or political theories so I am only speaking from the gut here.

Hi John, for me one of the best is Edgar Cahn's work: http://www.timebanks.org/founder.htm which for a while was promoted in the UK by the New Economics Foundation: http://www.neweconomics.org/gen/
Edgar Cahn's work is remarkable in that he was Robert Kennedy's speech writer until his assassination. Afterwards he founded an alternative Law School as part of Antioch University in Washington DC, which caused enormous stress and resulted in a massive heart attack that nearly killed him. He then took stock (facilitated by his wife) as to what else he wanted to do and has since been exclusively devoted to the development and promotion of Time Dollars. There is a publication 'No more throw-away people' but I am not sure how to get hold of it, and for a while there was a web site 'yeswecan'. Time Dollars were instrumental in a number of remarkable community development projects.
Might be of interest to people on the list.
Michael

Hi,
I wondered if anyone had any experience of, or views about, or
references on complimentary currencies in local communities. (Stuff like
the Brixton Brick project or the Totnes Pound).
Many thanks for any thoughts.
John
