Call for participation - CHI 2009 Workshop (Boston, MA, USA, April 2009)
Crowd-Computer Interaction
Description:
Crowds are an integral feature of contemporary life, and emerging
technologies raise questions around how new interactional forms might
work in crowd contexts. In this workshop, we will examine crowds as a
unit of interaction for technology design, focusing primarily on
collocated assemblies of people who interact in the same timeframe.
The goals of the workshop include identifying foundational materials,
canonical examples, and key gaps in our knowledge of crowd
interactions, in order to better understand the state of the art of
research and design of crowd technologies. The predominant themes of
the workshop are interactions within crowds, diverse crowd
configurations and individual and collective experience.
Over the course of the one-day workshop, we will engage in crowd
exercises intended to stimulate discussion and analysis, present a
selection of short papers, and engage in group discussions inspired by
workshop themes, paper presentations, and exercises.
We invite position papers of 2-3 pages, in .pdf or .doc format,
relating to the themes of the workshop. Topics include but are not
limited to:
> * Studies of crowd behaviour and dynamics
> * Crowd applications and games
> * Interactions between audience and performers
> * Techniques for collective interactions and gestures
> * Systems/studies relating to spectator experiences
> * Systems for measuring and responding to crowd behaviour
> * Mass effects of person-to-person mechanisms such as epidemic
> networking or file-sharing
>
> In addition each position paper should propose a crowd-based exercise
> to be done during the workshop. This exercise should be grounded in
> the participant's study of, or design for, crowd settings.
