Dear friends: I am trying to trace a copy of Juvenal and Persius which
was once in the library of the Sidney family of Penshurst Place, Kent.
There is a description of the book in the Puttick and Simpson catalogue
for their sale of June 27, 1861, which reads as follows:
Catalogue of a Valuable and Interesting Collection of Books, a large
part of which consists of the library of the Rev. Samuel Knight, D.D.,
Dean of Ely ... which will be sold by Auction by Messers Puttick and
Simpson ... on Thursday, June 27, 1861 and two following days...
Second day’s sale, #532: Juvenalis et Persii Satyrae, Libri V cum
Comment. Lubinii, old calf gilt. Hanoviae 1603. Dr. Mead’s copy, with
autograph on title of Robert Sydney, created Lord Sydney of Penshurst,
1603. Sold with anr. of same title, Birmingham: Baskerville 1761 – both
to Heath for 4s.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of this book? If not, are there any
suggestions for tracing it? I'd be very grateful -- Germaine (with
apologies for cross-posting)
