We have minimum standards for "fitness" in HMPS, individuals have to
attain this level in order to be considered "fit" enough to cope with
the rigours of prison officer work, inc emergency response and C&R
procedures. These standards were set following a study by University of
wolverhampton amongst others
Process is - pre employment medical screen (standard), any potential
problems, DDA issues etc highlighted
Fitness test a MINIMUM standard - therefore age and gender neutral. Once
employed they have to do it on an annual basis, there are formal
procedures should they fail
The fitness assessment consists of five main elements:
Grip test
The multi-stage fitness test (bleep test, must attain 5.4)
Dynamic upper body strength test
Speed agility (running and changing direction, time bounded)
Shield test (holding a shield in a functional position)
Staff must reach the required standard on each element in order to pass
the assessment.
Body-weight and height will be recorded in order to determine Body Mass
Index.
The pass standard will be graded; lowest for non-specialist grades,
progressively higher for C&R Advanced staff and Specialist grades.

Sadly I am unable to help however I will be very interested in any
helpful responses.
I also work at a mental health Trust with a Forensic service- there are
only so many community posts out there for those who appear to be
unsuitable for restraint procedures.
Perhaps it is time to put our heads together and devise a criteria if
there are no standards forth coming.
