Openings for Visiting Researchers at the Science Museum, London

Visiting Research Fellowships, 2009-2011

This is an exciting opportunity to carry out research on the unparalleled
collections of the Science Museum, London. To mark the centenary of its
founding as an independent museum in 1909, the Science Museum is offering
Visiting Research Fellowships for advanced research on its scientific,
technological and medical collections and the Science Museum Library. These
research fellowships will be particularly valuable for academics on sabbatical
leave or independent scholars with other sources of income.

The Science Museum has the largest and most significant collections relating to
science, technology and medicine. With over 300,000 objects in its care, the
Science Museum has particular strengths in the history of western science,
technology and medicine since 1700. This collection is supported by the books,
journals and archives which are available in the Science Museum Library.

The Science Museum's research programme has the aim of promoting scholarly
research which furthers our understanding of the development of science,
technology and medicine. The museum is not constrained by disciplinary
boundaries and will welcome applications from scholars across the whole
spectrum of academic endeavour. Applicants are at liberty to propose any topic
which makes good use of the Science Museum's collections.

If you have any queries (or need any additional information) please contact

Openings for Visiting Researchers in the History of Telecommunications at the
Science Museum, London

BT Connected Earth Research Fellowships

With the generous financial support of BT's Connected Earth programme, the
Science Museum has set up a two-year research programme of research fellowships
to promote research in the history of telecommunications, enabling scholars to
combine research in BT's archives and the Science Museum's world-class
collection of telecommunications-related objects. The research fellows will
also have access to the Science Museum Library. These visiting research
fellowships will be particularly valuable for academics on sabbatical leave or
independent scholars with other sources of income.

This is an exciting opportunity to carry out research on the history of
telecommunications in two of the most important institutions in this field. The
Science Museum has one of the most important collection of
telecommunications-related objects in the world, with particular strength in
early telegraphy and telephony. It is a partner in the BT Connected Earth
programme to develop the history and material culture of telecommunications
founded in April 2002. Further information on the Connected Earth programme can
be found online at http://www.connected-earth.com/index.cfm.
 BT Archives in
Holborn, London, is Britain's foremost corporate archives for the history of
telecommunications. Further information about the BT Archives can be found
online at http://www.btplc.com/Thegroup/BTsHistory/BTgrouparchives/index.htm.

The museum welcomes all applications for these fellowships which will further
our understanding of the history of telecommunications. Applicants are invited
to apply for details of possible research topics by email, but they are at
liberty to propose any topic which makes good use of the Science Museum's
collections, the collections of the other BT Connected Earth partners and the
BT Archives.

If you have any queries (or need any additional information) please contact
Peter Morris at [log in to unmask]
