Dear Allen,
Really? It's a shame that your only reaction to this generally
informative and intentionally welcoming post is to use it as a
platform for netiquette advice. However, your point about the
importance of self-presentation, especially via email, is well taken.
It makes me wonder about the divide between the many academics and the
many activists/advocates on this list: is there a divide, where did it
come from, must it continue? I'll be honest with you, there is a
person on another listserv I belong to who is known to respond with
random and rant-like posts to the most mundane messages. I, and
others, delete them immediately. This other listserv member also uses
self-depricating humor to belittle his years of service under the
suspicion that his non-academic pursuits are not appreciated. I hope
this is not your presumption because I can assure you that I, and the
UIC disability/disability studies community, do not feel this way.
Many of us work to combine our academic and activist work, and I fear
that some would see your message as a personal slight or professional
jab. I'm sure you didn't intend this. Perhaps we need a forum for
bringing together rather than separating people like yourself and
those with more academic leanings. For instance, this listserv.
thank you
