OSKA BRIGHT ON THE ROAD
The national film festival by and for people with learning disabilities comes to Hull!
Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 October 2008
Hull Flexible Care services, Artlink and Cineworld team up with Oska Bright to bring a unique film event to Cineworld in Hull next month.
Taking place on Tuesday 21 October 38 short films will be screened in separate sessions through the day. The films have come from many groups and individuals across the country, including The ShysterShadows from Coventry, Heart ‘n’ Soul in London and Work Power in Taunton.
Using music, dance, live action and animation, the range of films is quite outstanding. Oska Bright is unique and successful because it concentrates on peoples’ skills and not on the disability. Films are selected by a panel of artists with learning disabilities, who also introduce the screenings.
Oska Bright was recently voted the Best Arts Project in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards – one of 21 nominated projects across the country - a great tribute to the pioneering work of the artists involved.
June Hall, who is on the steering committee, says “We really enjoy running the festival and have learnt lots of new things. It's great to get the chance to be our own boss, to feel good about ourselves and to learn from each other. We know we can do this job as well as anybody else and the success of OSKA BRIGHT proves this.”
Everyone is welcome at the Oska Bright film-show. The films are sign language interpreted, captioned and audio description is available if required. Screenings are at 10.45am, 11.30am, 1pm and 1.45pm. You can come to them all or pick and mix to suit yourself. Different films are shown in each session.
The screenings are at Cineworld, Gibraltar Road, Kingswood. Tickets are free but should be booked in advance by calling Flexible Care Services on: 01482 331417.
On Wednesday 22 October, from 10.30am-12.30pm, the Oska Bright team is running a masterclass for learning disabled people keen to get involved in film-making. Come and be inspired - and maybe a Hull-made film will be an award winner in the next competition!
The masterclass is at Artlink Centre for Community Arts, 87 Princes Avenue. To book your place telephone: 01482 345104 or email: [log in to unmask]
