I'm using fsl 4.1.0 on mac os 10.4.11 and all is well. Maybe you could
try that version.
You should probably delete all previous versions of fsl before you start
a new installation.
When you get a file with .tar.gz extension, this means it has been
gzipped after it was tarred. I usually reverse the process by doing
gunzip and then tar separately, i.e.:
gunzip whatever.tar.gz
tar -xvf whatever.tar
It may not be necessary to do it in two steps, but it almost always works.
if un-tarring is unsuccessful, there is no point in proceeding with the
installation.
The contents of .bash_profile should look something like this:
FSLDIR=/Applications/fsl
. ${FSLDIR}/etc/fslconf/fsl.sh
PATH=${FSLDIR}/bin:${PATH}
DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
export FSLDIR PATH DISPLAY
