CALL FOR CANDIDATES
-------------------
PhD position "Modelling complex freight demand structures: logistics chains"
January 2008 - January 2012
Location: The Netherlands (Radboud University Nijmegen and/or TNO Delft)
We have a grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research
(NWO) for research into models that support the evaluation and improvement
of intermodal freight transport systems within the Netherlands. Within the
programme, 4 PhD positions are available. One full time PhD position is
available at the Radboud University Nijmegen.
The research may partly be carried out at the TNO research institute in Delft.
The position focuses on modeling complex freight demand structures, in
particular in interaction with international logistics chains. The project will be
developed in collaboration with 3 other PhD projects in the programme.
The model should describe spatial location of firms and their logistical
restructuring, take into account interaction between freight and passenger
traffic and allow the evaluation of the effect of major price changes in
transport. We propose to carry further the research on logistics modelling that
was pioneered in the Netherlands with the SMILE model in the 1990s. Recent
research work in micro-level normative and descriptive modelling of logistics
chains needs to be critically evaluated and extended to allow aggregation into
macro-level modelling applications.
Applicants should have strong analytical skills and preferably an education in
transport modelling, economics, econometrics or mathematics. Experience with
transportation modelling is preferred. The candidate will work in an
international research environment; therefore, a strong command of the
English language is necessary. Good communication skills are necessary.
We are investigating the possibility to combine the PhD position with a part
time employment at the TNO Business Unit Mobility & Logistics. This group
carries out extensive contract research projects for governments, using
freight models at the local, national and international level.
Also strategic partnerships exist with various universities within and outside
Europe to exchange knowledge, methods and modelling instruments.
