...good point Jane! HyperRESEARCH has the advantage of being equally
compatible with Macs (OSX 10.3 or later) or PC's and the new Intel Macs.
One of the pleasing things about both ATLAS.ti and HyperRESEARCH (both
supporting the coding of text, graphics and video) is that they provide
'limited' free editions, which DON'T TIME EXPIRE. So endless
experimentation is possible while you make up your mind. The 'limited'
bit means that you are restricted in the number of files and codes (in
the free version). Neither of these has synchronised playback with
transcript or notes yet -(as Nvivo8 and Transana has-see earlier
messages)- but both provide very fast hyperlinking between code and
coded clip.
Another software DRS (freely downloadable) is the end product (actually
still being tweaked) of an ESRC (uk) NCeSS programme. DRS - short for
Digital Replay System, is still a project under way - but the system is
working and downloadable, but they are likely to release a new version
with major changes in October. The system makes it possible to have
multiple windows, replaying multiple forms of digital information -
video, phone data, text, sat-nav data etc and synchronising where
relevant.

Onwards and upwards! BTW - I'm cross posting this to qual-software
discussion list -since the subject matter of the history in this mail
will be of interest to its subscribers

Another program to look at is Hyper-research. I have not
used it but a student used it with video and sound clips.
