THIRD Wednesday of the month:- September 2008 to April 2009 - ALL Welcome
Following on from our last series of meetings at Quinborne Community Centre, we are pleased to confirm, we will run another season.
The meetings are open to all, not just Members of ISSES, and you are encouraged to bring along as many interested friends as possible. Apart from the formal element of the meeting the Quinborne Community Centre boasts a bar, with very modest prices, which provides an excellent opportunity for attendees to have a drink and a natter after the meeting. Please note that to cover the cost of hiring the room a small donation of £3/head will be appreciated.
Programme
September 17th Steam in California - Chris Hodrien
The California oil industry is probably about the last place on earth that you would expect to find steam engines operating. But as late as 1984, two hot crude oil pipelines from the famous Bakersfield oilfields traversing across the coast mountain ranges to an export terminal at St Luis Obispo were pumped and heated entirely by steam, using oil from the pipelines as fuel. Chris Hodrien will share his slides and experiences from his study visit to the lines with local ISSES member Bill Sawyer back in 1984 while on work assignment in Los Angeles. This was originally written up in Stationary Power No. 6 (1989). If possible copies will be available to purchase on the night.
October 15th and November 19th speakers to be confirmed.
December 17th Members' slides and curiosities.
An opportunity to bring along your own slides, photos or other curiosities for others to see. These need not be restricted to steam engineering but anything else just so long as it has some interest to those interested in steam or other technical/industrial history.
Please note All meetings will start at 7:30p.m.
