I'll buy into this one, and maybe cut off discussion before it starts ...
The answer, from my research, is: if you want to grow in expertise, yes, and
you will also need to work at the mentor(, the coach, the teacher, the
manager, the writer, etc,) being yourself.
It is, as I understand it, about an element of/ the nature of 'reflexivity'
... learning how to become the subject of one's objectivity: learning to be
able to observe self, in the role, and to apply the principles of the
practice of the role to oneself - and if they don't work for yourself, then
working with the understanding of why you are claiming, in practice, that
these principles should work when working with others.
