PhD studentships in the safety and quality of health care
The NIHR King's Patient Safety and Service Quality Research Centre (PSSQ) is funding three PhD students, one through an ESRC CASE award and two through new PSSQ Centre studentships. These are exciting opportunities for social scientists with an interest in applied health research to carry out a PhD. The award will provide PhD fees and a maintenance grant of £19,300 per annum (full time), which is exempt from tax and NI, for 3 years.

The Centre comprises four research programmes: Innovations; Organisational Governance; Risk; and Workforce. Applications are invited to study for a PhD based within one of these programmes. Research proposals may relate to one of the following areas:

Innovations Programme: studying the translation of novel technologies into healthcare and innovative ways of organising services in relation to safety and quality of care.

Current projects within the programme include: exploring how patient journeys through complex care systems can be made safer ie how delays in the detection and management of deterioration can be improved in maternity and acute medicine, and how the impact of novel health technologies on safety and quality of care as they are developed and translated into mainstream provision can be improved. We would be interested in PhD proposals looking at technical surveillance solutions to improve patient safety, such as centralized intrapartum monitoring, users experiences of participating in therapeutic innovation or other relevant topics.

Organisational Governance Programme: studying the systems used to ensure safe, high quality care.

Currently the programme has projects on improving governance for infection control and medication errors; and on public and patient involvement in improving safety and quality. We would be interested in PhD proposals looking at the governance of a range of safety and quality issues which might include, for example, what information an organisation requires to ensure safe, high quality care; what role 'blame' plays in creating a safe, high quality organisation, the role of patients and the public in safety and quality, or other relevant topics.

Risk Programme: studying how risk is calculated and managed by staff, and communicated to patients.

The Risk Programme is currently focusing on how a particular NHS trust (King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH)) can improve one method of aiding patient safety: the use of reports of patient safety incidents (accidents and near-misses) as a means of identifying risk.

Workforce Programme: studying how staff are managed and supported, exploring the psychological contract underpinning the provision of care.

There is therefore an interest in factors affecting relevant staff attitudes and behaviour. Initial work is focusing on bullying and harassment, communication, the psychological contract and the application within the health sector of the service profit chain and related customer/patient service conceptslooks at how staff are managed and supported, exploring the psychological contract underpinning the provision of care.

Applications are invited for any topics relating to the above programmes and their overall themes. Further information on the Programmes and current projects can be found at http://www.kingspssq.org

If you wish to discuss the PSSQ Centre studentships further, please contact Prof. Naomi Fulop (for Organisational Governance-email [log in to unmask]), Prof. Jane Sandall (for Innovation-email [log in to unmask]), Prof David Guest ([log in to unmask]) or Dr Anneliese Dodds ([log in to unmask])

For further information on the Centre and these awards and details of how to apply, please go to: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/sspp/mgmt/phdstudentships.html
The closing date for all studentships is the 14 October 2008. Please submit completed applications to Xanthe Henson - Administrator, PSSQRC, Strand Bridge House, GL12 - 2 Basement, 138-142 Strand, London WC2R 1HH. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview.
