Libraries for the 21st Century: is Hillingdon the future?
Date: Tuesday 9 September 2008
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Map: http://digbig.com/3pmf
Speaker: Councillor Henry Higgins, London Borough of Hillingdon
Hillingdon Council has taken a radical approach to its library services,
following advice from Tim Coates. Out have gone 'enforced silence',
restricted opening hours, back-office work and qualified staff. Instead,
they are creating new, innovative environments with fresh ideas and improved
services; users are encouraged to have a chat over a book and a coffee.
While other library authorities are watching Hillingdon with interest, not
everyone in the library world is happy with developments there.
Councillor Higgins, who wrote the initial report, will discuss the ideas
behind it and give his views on the future of public libraries. Hillingdon's
Director and Deputy-Director of Planning and Community Services will be
present to answer questions.
Henry Higgins, who studied graphic art and design, has been a Hillingdon
councillor since 2002. In 2006 he was promoted to Cabinet Member for
Culture, Sport and Leisure, a position in Hillingdon's Cabinet aimed at
helping the borough to become a centre for learning and culture. Since
taking up the role, Henry has embarked on an ambitious modernisation
programme for Hillingdon's libraries and successfully secured additional
funding for the first 50 metre pool to be built in London for 40 years.
This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP
Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements.
